Bug Jam 33 Report:
Come rain or shine, you Bug Jammers sure know how to party! We experienced all weathers this weekend, from the hottest day on record on Thursday to some summertime rain on Sunday; despite all this that festival vibe was still in the air as tents went up, flags got hoisted and those barbies were lit! Our glorious British weather didn’t dampen your spirits – you hardcore Bug Jammers still partied the nights away and enjoyed all the action we had lined up! We salute you!
The Main Stage kicked off the weekends evening entertainment with Band Theft Audio followed by The Spitfires with headliner ASH; The Dance Zone showcased Retro Reunion bringing us the best and biggest club hits to dance to until the early hours featuring Pied Piper and Sweet Female Attitude; we got our swing on over in the Retro Zone with The Electric Swing Circus preceded by C@ in the H@ and Mr Tea and the Minions; plus VJ Gary and his karaoke set had us partying all night long over in Fuelers Bar.
The Live Action Arena was running all weekend with mind-blowing performances from the death-defying Terry Grant and Lee Bowers with their legendary stunts plus Monster Truck mayhem from Podzilla and Swamp Thing as well as the retro Drift Beetle.
Celebrating 30 Years on the VW scene at Santa Pod Raceway, The Cool Flo Arena pulled out all the stops this year to celebrate the occasion with an amazing display of show cars, ‘Back to 89’ special display (new for 2019), old school BMX, banging beats from ‘Slippers the Split’ DJ Bus and of course, the awesome Cool Flo ramp.
New for 2019; the unique and welcoming Magic Teapot kept people refreshed and rested with endless tea and fireside merriness, Granny Turismo burnt some shopping trolley rubber round site with giggles and top tunes a plenty plus the vibrant and eclectic variety performances on stage provided the perfect daytime entertainment.
On Saturday afternoon, Bug Jam 33 hosted Bug Jam’s Got Talent where it was the audience’s chance to be the stars of the show. We saw a fantastic range of performances with singers, guitarists and dancers. It was a tough decision for the judges this year with some serious talent to choose from; in the end, it was Jenny Kelly who took the prize and the trophy wither stunning rendition of Adele’s Hello. Well done Jenny!
Santa Pod Raceway’s very own Marathon, The Human Powered Race took place on Saturday afternoon! As ever, hundreds of you rocked up to the start line with some very vibrant and varied forms of human powered transport. Well done to all who completed the half mile; whether you ran, walked, rode, scootered or danced your way to the finish line - we salute you! The trophies went to the following Human Powered Race Champions:
The Autoglym Show & Shine Competition was on Saturday this year showcasing an outstanding congregation of VWs; the show paddock saw all types of pristine and stunning automobiles of all shapes and sizes. Whether you were there to see the ultimate custom car, rare original or restored beauty – this impressive line-up of VWs had something for everyone making judging this year particularly hard! Thank you to all of you who entered – you did us proud! Well done to the winners of the following classes:
Bug Wam provided the ultimate chill out zone and rest bite from the rain; comfy sofas and live acoustic music created the perfect mellow vibe over the weekend with a Gin Palace bar for the odd tipple or two! Little Buggerz kept the kiddies entertained with all sorts of weird and wonderful workshops, activities, shows and games to get stuck into with a jam-packed schedule.
The RWYB Competition was hard fought so we’d like to congratulate the following winners:
Hopefully many of you were able to catch the unmistakable sights, sounds and smells of the Top Fuel Nitro Funny Cars out on the ¼ mile on Friday and Saturday! As well as the legendary FireForce 3 Jet Funny Car piloted by Martin Hill running a crazy 6.01 @ 268.16mph!
The insane and mesmerising preacher, The Right Reverend Michael Alabama Jackson opened the Main Stage for us on Saturday night with Oh My God! It’s The Church. It was then time for the main man himself; Platinum selling EXAMPLE took to the stage with a crowd of thousands waiting in anticipation for hits such as ‘Changed the Way You Kissed Me’ and ‘We’ll Be Coming Back’ – the party was well and truly underway!
Alchemy hosted the Dance Zone on Saturday night with legendary sets from RatPack and LTJ Bukem whilst over in the Retro Zone it was a Bug Jam 90s Explosion of live music from Baby D, Berri, Urban Cookie Collective and Kelly Lorenna hosted by Dario G. We partied hard over in Fuelers Bar, the Silent Disco kept those decks spinning with a variety of tunes to boogie along to till the very early hours!
Midday on Sunday it was the kiddies chance to wow the crowds as we hosted Little Buggerz Got Talent. From singers to dancing acts, the judges were very impressed with what they saw; this year, it was Toby Rollinson aged 9 who took the prize and the trophy playing and singing Bohemian Rhapsody on the piano dressed as Freddie Mercury (moustache included!) Well done Toby!

The Show Paddock on Sunday hosted the Rust & Rat Competition. An awesome array of styles and designs were on display, this competition can be instinctive and abstract, however, after many turns around the paddock, I’m sure you’ll agree, the winners were as follows:
From beetles to buses, campers to caddies and golfs to ghias – Bug Jam 33 saw them all! We hope you enjoyed your weekend as much as we did and had a fun and action-packed festival.
